Virginia road test checklist: eligibility, vehicle and interpreter

Check Virginia road-test eligibility, CSMA forms, vehicle equipment and interpreter arrangements before a DMV appointment.

By the US DMV editorial team · Passenger-car permit study

Before booking a Virginia road skills test, confirm who will administer your test. Approved driver education includes road testing through the school; the DMV appointment route is not automatically the next step for every learner.

Confirm the route and date

As of October 30, 2026, a never-licensed applicant 18 or older may hold a learner’s permit for at least 60 days and take the DMV road test, or complete state-approved driver education while holding the permit, including the school’s road test. Applicants under 18 generally test through approved driver education, with a nine-month permit and parental certification of 45 practice hours, including 15 after sunset, subject to the married/emancipated certification exceptions explained in the document guide. Check the license application instructions.

From January 1, 2027, first-time applicants 18–20 must complete approved education and hold a permit 90 days. This is a future requirement on this article’s review date; use the rules for your actual licensing date.

Prepare the paperwork

The DMV road skills page requires Virginia residency, a passed knowledge exam and a completed CSMA 140 Road Skills Test Acknowledgement. Complete the applicant and vehicle-owner sections that apply; arrange the owner’s signatures before arriving.

Bring:

CheckWhat to prepare
ApplicantLearner’s permit and any required corrective lenses
Training/practiceApproved education proof or CSMA 19, as applicable; confirm with the school and DMV which completion records or certificates to bring
Vehicle documentsRegistration card, valid plates and safety-inspection sticker
Safety equipmentWorking brakes, belts, horn, lights, signals, mirrors and speedometer
Interpreter, if usedInterpreter’s unexpired U.S. license and the required belted seating

If you passed the knowledge exam but were not issued a permit, DMV says to bring the documents required for an original Virginia license. Check the first-license folder before leaving.

The CSMA 19 form is a supervised-practice record, not a self-signed promise. The licensed observer certifies the maneuvers and signs as instructed. Use it to review backing, right-of-way, lanes, intersections, turns and parking; practice backing away from traffic.

Inspect the actual test vehicle

You supply the vehicle. Check brakes, safety belts, horn, lights, turn signals, mirrors and speedometer. Check the inspection sticker, plates and registration before test day, not just whether the engine starts. A rental vehicle or Zipcar is allowed only if you are an authorized driver on the rental agreement.

Travel to DMV with the supervision your permit requires. Plan separately for your accompanying driver’s wait and the people participating in the test; confirm any additional passenger arrangement with the center.

Arrange translation before the visit

DMV tests on public roads in English and allows a qualified translator or ASL interpreter; DMV does not provide one. The person must have an unexpired U.S. driver’s license and meet DMV’s age and certification conditions. Confirm the age requirement with the center when arranging someone who is exactly 18.

A spoken-language translator sits in the back seat; an ASL interpreter sits in the front seat. The vehicle must have the required belted rear seat for interpreter use. A family or community member serving as translator must follow the same rules: translate instructions and your narrative only, without coaching. DMV gives a warning for the first prohibited communication; the second causes automatic failure.

Arrive 15 minutes early for an appointment. For a first or second failed road test, the waiting period is two days. After three failures, use the required remedial training instructions: the in-vehicle component is fourteen 50-minute driving periods before a fourth attempt. Review the examiner’s feedback while continuing lawful supervised practice.
