Florida Class E road test: eligibility, car checks and practice
Check teen eligibility, bring a test-ready vehicle and practice the maneuvers FLHSMV lists for the Class E driving-skills exam.

A good road-test appointment begins before you reach the testing lane. Check your eligibility, inspect the car and practice the actions the examiner will ask you to perform. The FLHSMV driving-skills guide lists both vehicle requirements and assessed maneuvers.
Check the applicant before the car
Teen applicants must be at least 16, normally hold the learner’s license for 12 months or until age 18, whichever comes first, and meet the driving-record requirements. Under-18 applicants need certified experience of 50 hours, including 10 at night. The teen licensing page explains the certification and moving-violation conditions. Adults do not acquire a one-year learner holding requirement simply by applying for their first license.
Arrange legal transportation to the test. A learner’s license requires a licensed driver 21 or older in the nearest seat to your right, under section 322.1615. It allows daylight driving for the first three months, then driving until 10 p.m. Those practice restrictions still apply while you prepare for an exam.
For a licensed 16-year-old, normal driving hours are 6 a.m.–11 p.m.; at 17 they are 5 a.m.–1 a.m. The exceptions are driving directly to or from work or being accompanied by a licensed driver 21 or older. These licensed-teen exceptions do not replace the learner’s supervision rules.
Inspect the vehicle the day before
Bring valid registration and proof of insurance. Check the plate expiration and test the horn, turn signals, brake lights, taillights, headlights and driver-side windshield wipers. Inspect tires, brakes, steering and mirrors. Front doors must open from inside and outside, and glass must not obstruct visibility.
An examiner conducts a basic safety inspection and may refuse an unsuitable vehicle. A low-speed vehicle with a maximum speed of 20–25 mph is not acceptable. If you plan to use a borrowed, school or rental car, confirm your permission to drive it, insurance and the provider’s requirements before test day. Do not discover a warning light or broken signal at check-in.
Rehearse skills as complete routines
- Three-point turn: practice controlling the vehicle in the listed 20–40-foot space, checking for traffic before every movement.
- Backing: the listed exercise is 50 feet, slowly while looking to the rear. FLHSMV says not to rely on the rear-view mirror or camera monitor for this maneuver.
- Parking: practice straight-in parking within the space and parking on uphill and downhill grades, with and without a curb.
- Stops and intersections: stop fully before the line or crosswalk, observe both directions, yield correctly and wait until the intersection is clear.
- Turns and traffic flow: use the correct lane, signal for the last 100 feet before a turn, pass only when safe and maintain the listed minimum four-second following distance.
Also practice a quick, controlled stop on instruction and a driving position that keeps both hands on the wheel. Work with a supervising driver who can identify missed observations; smooth steering cannot compensate for failing to yield.
Finish the appointment carefully
Confirm the provider’s arrival time and required documents. For a standard test, only you and the examiner ride in the car; other passengers are not permitted. Current knowledge and skills exams are in English; arrange any disability accommodations separately with the provider. Afterward, listen to the examiner’s feedback and complete any remaining issuance steps at the service center. A third-party pass can still be selected for a mandatory random retest. Use FL Driver for rule review alongside actual supervised driving, and the first-license document guide for paperwork.
