Illinois road-test checklist: documents, vehicle and maneuvers
Prepare insurance, registration and a safe test vehicle, plan care for children or pets, and rehearse the Illinois driving-exam tasks.
By the US DMV editorial team · Passenger-car permit study
Prepare for the Illinois driving exam as a complete trip: getting to the facility legally, checking in with the correct documents, supplying a safe vehicle and showing consistent observation on the road. The Secretary of State’s 2026 Rules of the Road, printed pages 14–15, describes the test requirements and maneuvers.
Confirm you are ready to apply
Bring the identification and licensing documents appropriate to your application, including your instruction permit and education evidence where applicable. Teen applicants should check the graduated-license requirements: at least nine months with a permit and 50 hours of additional practice, including ten at night. The practice hours are separate from the driving instruction in the education course.
If you have a Cooperative Driver Testing Program certificate, have the facility confirm whether you qualify for a facility-test exemption. The administrative rules provide for spot checks, so a course-related test does not guarantee that no facility driving exam will be required.
Prepare the car and its paperwork
The vehicle must be properly licensed, insured, safely equipped and in the class appropriate to your application. Put proof of insurance with the registration information. An Illinois-registered vehicle must display valid front and rear plates and a valid registration sticker. A vehicle registered in another state must meet that state’s registration requirements.
Before leaving home, check:
- Turn signals, brake lights and other lighting needed for the conditions.
- Brakes and parking brake, horn, mirrors and the ability to see clearly through the windows.
- Seat belts, doors and other required safety equipment.
- Your familiarity with the controls and the way the car starts, stops and reverses.
The examiner will check vehicle safety; equipment that is missing or unsafe can prevent the test. Consult the handbook’s equipment chapter and the inspection provisions in the administrative rules if your vehicle has an unusual registration or equipment situation.
Arrange a legal driver for the journey. A learner driving to the facility must obey the instruction-permit supervision rules throughout the trip; the appointment does not authorize solo driving.
Plan who waits while you test
For a standard driving exam, the handbook allows only you and the examiner in the vehicle, and both must wear safety belts. Children and pets cannot ride along or be left unattended at the facility. If they must come with you, bring someone to care for them during the test. Deaf or hard-of-hearing applicants may request an interpreter in advance through SOS; arrange disability-related communication assistance before test day.
Rehearse the actual driving tasks
| Task described by the handbook | What to practice |
|---|---|
| Before moving | Adjust the seat, belt and mirrors; identify the controls and parking brake |
| Backing approximately 50 feet | Move slowly, straight and smoothly; turn your head to the right and watch behind |
| Turnabout using an alley on the left | Signal before entering, back out carefully and remain on your side of the street |
| Uphill and downhill parking and starts | Control the car and use the appropriate parking and starting procedure |
| Driving in traffic | Obey signs, signals, lane markings and right-of-way; use signals and maintain observation |
A traffic violation or dangerous action during the exam causes an automatic failure. Build a repeatable routine for scanning, yielding and stopping completely. A neat maneuver cannot compensate for failing to notice another road user.
