Arizona Road-Test Checklist: Eligibility, Vehicle and English Directions
Prepare the required documents, safe vehicle, rental agreement and manual driving skills before your MVD road test.
By the US DMV editorial team · Passenger-car permit study
Book an Arizona road-test appointment after meeting the knowledge-test and age requirements. Teens should first check their Class G practice or driver-education route; some qualifying education programs provide a road-test waiver.
Bring the right people and records
Bring your application, required identity documents and permit if issued. Under-18 applicants need their permit, the required holding period and a parent/legal guardian accompanying them. Adults taking the first-license route may use their passed written test instead of a permit. Arrange lawful transportation to the site; a test booking does not authorize unsupervised permit driving.
Check the actual test vehicle
MVD requires valid registration, a plate and current liability insurance; out-of-country insurance is not accepted. For a rental, you must be listed as a driver on the agreement. A three-day permit is not acceptable.
Use the vehicle checklist before leaving:
- Tires must be properly inflated and free of excessive wear or damage.
- Doors, windows, horn, belts, turn signals and brake lights must work.
- The windshield and at least two mirrors must give an unobstructed view; clear debris from the interior.
- A fuel vehicle needs at least a quarter tank; an EV should not show a low-battery warning.
From June 1 through September 22, after noon, a vehicle without air conditioning cannot be used for skills testing. Tests may also stop for unsafe weather or vehicle conditions.
Practice the task, not a guessed route
Examiner directions are in English. Learn the words for stopping, turning and changing lanes before the appointment. MVD prohibits ADAS use during the test, including auto-drive and parking assistance; maneuvers must be manual. Ask the location how its requirements apply to your vehicle before test day.
Practice full stops, yielding, shoulder checks, lane positioning and controlled parking with a qualified supervisor. Do not try to recover a missed instruction with a sudden unsafe maneuver. MVD allows only one road test per customer per day.
