## Prepare the car as carefully as the driving

A Washington drive test checks whether you apply traffic laws safely in real situations. Before booking, use the [DOL directory](https://dol.wa.gov/driver-licenses-and-permits/driver-training-and-testing/driver-training-schools-and-testing-locations) to confirm the provider’s fee, schedule, vehicle arrangements and required identification. Ask about any retest waiting period.

According to [DOL’s testing requirements](https://dol.wa.gov/driver-licenses-and-permits/driver-training-and-testing/do-i-need-take-test), you need **80 out of 100** to pass, and a passing drive-test score is valid for **one year**. Passing the test is one step toward issuance; it does not itself give an unlicensed learner permission to drive alone.

## The evening-before checklist

Bring proof of current liability insurance for the actual vehicle, plus a vehicle in good working order with valid registration, tabs and plates. The insurance document must show the policyholder, vehicle description and coverage start and end dates. Use [DOL’s full pre-test checklist](https://dol.wa.gov/driver-licenses-and-permits/driver-training-and-testing/what-expect-your-drive-test) to check the car before test day.

Have a helper observe the brake lights, including the center light, and the turn signals. Check the parking brake, seat belts, mirrors and the passenger door from both inside and outside. Clear anything that blocks the windshield. Test the driver’s window and, when weather calls for them, wipers, headlights and defrosters. An equipment problem can prevent the test from starting, even after a long trip to the center.

For example, if you borrow a family car, check its documents and controls the day before. Do not assume the insurance paper left in the glovebox is still current or that you know how its parking brake works.

## Practice a complete trip

Use a familiar car and lawful supervision. Permit practice on public roads requires a licensed driver with at least five years of driving experience beside you, or a qualified instructor under the [permit rule](https://app.leg.wa.gov/rcw/default.aspx?cite=46.20.055).

Plan practice that links maneuvers to observation:

- Leave the curb only after signaling and checking traffic.
- Change lanes using mirrors, a signal, a head check and a safe gap.
- Approach intersections at a speed that lets you read signs, scan for people and yield correctly.
- Stop smoothly at the correct position and adjust speed to visibility, weather and traffic.
- Back with control and direct observation, rather than treating a display as your only view.

DOL’s maneuver list includes arm signals, a brake-reaction/emergency-stop exercise, hill parking, parallel parking **without parking-assist features**, and backing around a right-hand corner as a simulated driveway or alley exit. Practice these with a supervisor in a suitable safe location. Review the official demonstration videos linked on DOL’s test page to understand the instructions.

## On arrival and after the test

Arrive with time to present documents and settle into the car. DOL limits occupants to the applicant, examiner, a service animal and an interpreter for a deaf or hard-of-hearing applicant; an authorized observer may sometimes ride along. A family member cannot ordinarily sit in as a coach. No weapons are allowed in the test vehicle.

Listen to each instruction and keep scanning while you carry it out. Afterward, use the examiner’s feedback to identify specific skills for more practice. Confirm your score was submitted, then finish the applicable licensing steps before driving independently.
