# Virginia knowledge test: official resources, scores and languages

Use Virginia DMV manuals and practice materials to prepare for the two-part knowledge exam, language options and age-specific retesting rules.

### Article — English

Virginia's knowledge exam has two separate passing requirements. You must get **all 10 road-sign questions correct** before moving to the general section, then answer **at least 24 of 30 general questions correctly: 80%**. A strong general score cannot make up for a missed sign.

## Use the DMV manual as your starting point

The [Virginia Driver's Manual page](https://www.dmv.virginia.gov/licenses-ids/exams/manual) links to the interactive manual, study guide, complete PDF, individual sections and Spanish materials. Its practice questions cover traffic signs and general knowledge. Use the ordinary driver's manual for a passenger-vehicle permit; motorcycle and commercial credentials have separate requirements.

Read signs together with their meaning and required action. Then study right-of-way, turns and lane changes, sharing the road, speed and stopping, occupant protection and penalties. After a wrong answer, find the rule in the manual and explain which detail changes the action. For example, an undivided road and a road separated by an actual barrier can produce different duties at a stopped school bus.

The [official exam page](https://www.dmv.virginia.gov/licenses-ids/exams/know-exam) explains the format and administration. Practice materials help you check understanding; they are not a promise of the questions you will receive.

## Arrange the language or format you need

DMV lists **English, Spanish, Chinese/Mandarin and Chinese/Mandarin (Traditional)** among the available knowledge-exam languages. It also lists American Sign Language and other languages. Oral examinations are available on request at DMV customer service centers. Ask for the specific language and format before starting.

The language of a downloadable manual and the language available on the testing computer are separate questions. The manual's [testing section](https://www.dmv.virginia.gov/sites/default/files/forms/dmv39b.pdf) says a translator cannot be used for a language in which DMV already offers the exam. Do not assume you can bring someone to explain questions, or that knowledge-exam arrangements also cover the road test.

## Know the retesting conditions

- **Under 18:** wait a full **15 days** after a failed knowledge exam. DMV's example is a January 1 failure with January 17 as the earliest retest.
- **18 or older:** test no more than **once per day**.
- **After three failures:** complete the qualifying education before a fourth attempt; the course must be completed **after the third failure**.

Use the detailed [three-failure training page](https://www.dmv.virginia.gov/licenses-ids/training/three-exam-failures) before enrolling. Adults may complete an approved **eight-hour Driver's Manual course**. A person under 18 who already completed classroom driver education before the third failure may use that course too; otherwise, the required classroom driver-education component must be completed after the failures. A driver improvement clinic does not satisfy this requirement. Present the required completion evidence to DMV.

Each retest requires a new application and the required identity/residency documentation. If you do not obtain the license or permit within one year of passing the knowledge exam, DMV requires retesting.

## Plan the visit as well as the study

DMV offers appointments and walk-in testing. Its listed walk-in cutoff is **4:30 p.m. on weekdays and 11:30 a.m. on Saturdays**; verify your center's hours and services. Bring the correct application documents and any corrective lenses needed for the vision screening. Phones and outside help are prohibited during the exam.

## Empieza por el manual del DMV

Sus ejercicios cubren señales y conocimientos generales. Para un permiso de automóvil usa el manual ordinario; motocicletas y licencias comerciales tienen requisitos propios.

Relaciona cada señal con su significado y la acción exigida. Después estudia prioridad de paso, giros y cambios de carril, convivencia vial, velocidad y frenado, protección de ocupantes y sanciones. Al equivocarte, busca la norma y explica qué detalle cambia tu obligación. Por ejemplo, una vía sin separación física y otra con una barrera real pueden exigir acciones distintas ante un autobús escolar detenido.

## Pide el idioma o formato adecuado

El DMV ofrece el examen en **inglés, español, Chinese/Mandarin y Chinese/Mandarin (Traditional)**, entre otros idiomas. También incluye lengua de señas estadounidense, ASL. Puedes solicitar un examen oral en los centros de atención del DMV. Indica el idioma y el formato concretos antes de comenzar.

El idioma de un manual descargable y el disponible en la computadora del examen son asuntos distintos. La [sección de pruebas del manual](https://www.dmv.virginia.gov/sites/default/files/forms/dmv39b.pdf) indica que no puedes usar traductor para un idioma en el que el DMV ya ofrece el examen. ## Condiciones para repetirlo

- **Menores de 18 años:** deben esperar **15 días completos** después de reprobar. El ejemplo del DMV permite volver el 17 de enero si se reprobó el 1 de enero.
- **Desde los 18 años:** solo pueden examinarse **una vez al día**.
- **Después de tres intentos fallidos:** se requiere formación válida antes del cuarto intento, completada **después del tercer fallo**.

Los adultos pueden completar un **curso aprobado de ocho horas del Manual del Conductor**. Los menores de 18 que ya habían completado la parte teórica de educación vial antes del tercer fallo también pueden usarlo; en caso contrario deben completar la parte teórica exigida después de los fallos. Una clínica de mejoramiento de conducción no satisface este requisito. Presenta al DMV la constancia correspondiente.

Cada nuevo intento requiere otra solicitud y los documentos de identidad y residencia exigidos. Si no obtienes licencia o permiso dentro del año posterior a aprobar el teórico, el DMV exige repetirlo.

## Organiza también la visita

Hay citas y atención sin cita. Los límites publicados para presentarse sin cita son **4:30 p. m. de lunes a viernes y 11:30 a. m. los sábados**; confirma el horario y los servicios del centro. Lleva los documentos y los lentes necesarios para la revisión de visión. Durante el examen están prohibidos el teléfono y la ayuda externa.

## 从DMV手册开始

[弗州驾驶员手册入口](https://www.dmv.virginia.gov/licenses-ids/exams/manual)提供互动版、学习指南、完整PDF、分章节下载和西班牙语材料。官方练习同时覆盖标志和综合知识。准备普通小汽车学习许可，应使用普通驾驶员手册；摩托车及商业驾照另有要求。

学习标志时，把外观、含义和要求采取的动作放在一起理解。随后复习让行、转弯与换道、道路共享、速度与停车、乘员保护和处罚。做错一道题，就回到原文找规则，再解释哪个条件改变了驾驶义务。例如，同样是对面校车停车，无实体分隔道路与有真正隔离设施的道路，处理方式可能不同。

[官方考试专页](https://www.dmv.virginia.gov/licenses-ids/exams/know-exam)说明考试结构与办理方式。练习材料用于检查理解，不保证实际考试会出现某道题。

## 开考前提出语言或形式要求

DMV考试语言列有**英语、西班牙语、Chinese/Mandarin及Chinese/Mandarin (Traditional)**，也包括美国手语ASL和其他语言。各DMV客户服务中心可按请求提供口述考试。应在开始前明确提出需要的语言及形式。

可下载手册的语言，与考试电脑提供的语言，是两件事。手册的[考试章节](https://www.dmv.virginia.gov/sites/default/files/forms/dmv39b.pdf)说明：DMV已经提供该语言考试时，不能另外使用翻译人员。不要以为可以带人解释题目，也不要把笔试语言安排直接套到路考。

## 按年龄核对重考条件

- **未满18岁：** 笔试失败后须等满**15天**。DMV举例为1月1日未通过，最早1月17日再考。
- **已满18岁：** 每天最多考**一次**。
- **三次未通过：** 第四次考试前必须完成规定培训，而且结业日期必须在**第三次失败之后**。

报班前先看[三次考试失败后的培训说明](https://www.dmv.virginia.gov/licenses-ids/training/three-exam-failures)。成年人可完成认可的**8小时驾驶员手册课程**。未满18岁、且在第三次失败前已完成驾驶教育课堂部分者，也可使用这一课程；否则须在失败后完成要求的驾驶教育课堂部分。普通驾驶改进课程（driver improvement clinic）不能替代这一要求。重考前应向DMV提供相应结业证明。

每次重考都要重新提交申请及所需身份、住址材料。通过知识考试后一年内没有取得驾照或许可，DMV要求重新考试。

## 把到场准备一起做好

DMV提供预约及不预约到场服务。公布的不预约考试到场截止时间是**周一至周五下午4:30、周六上午11:30**；仍须核对具体中心的营业时间和服务。带齐申请文件，以及视力检查需要的矫正眼镜。考试期间禁止使用手机或接受外界帮助。
