# Ohio knowledge test: official resources, languages and passing rules

Use Ohio BMV resources to prepare both knowledge-test sections, choose a language and plan online or in-person testing.

Prepare for Ohio’s permit knowledge test in two tracks: **traffic laws and safe driving**, and **signs, signals and directions**. Studying both matters because a strong result in one section does not replace passing the other.

## Understand the score before practicing

The [BMV knowledge-test page](https://bmv.ohio.gov/dl-gdl.aspx) describes **40 multiple-choice questions** with a **75% passing requirement**. The more detailed [administrative rule 4501:1-1-08](https://codes.ohio.gov/ohio-administrative-code/rule-4501:1-1-08) requires **75% in the laws/rules section and 75% in the signs/signals section separately**, each containing at least 20 equally weighted questions. For the 40-question format, prepare to get at least **15 of 20 in each section**; do not rely on 30 correct answers distributed unevenly across the whole test.

For BMV’s 40-question format, use these targets:

Start from the [BMV driver-manual directory](https://www.bmv.ohio.gov/forms-general.aspx), which links to the Ohio Driver Manual, also called the Digest of Motor Vehicle Laws. Use the current material reached through BMV; if a manual link is unavailable, use the BMV topic pages and ask an exam station how to obtain the manual before relying on an undated copy.

## Use the sample to find gaps

Try the [official sample knowledge test](https://www.bmv.ohio.gov/dl-sample-test.aspx), select your answers and use its scoring control. It is a short sample, not the complete exam question bank and not a promise that the same questions will appear.

Make a two-column review sheet. Put right-of-way, stopping, following distance and adverse-weather decisions under laws; put sign shapes, colors, words, signal meanings and pavement directions under signs. For each mistake, explain what you would do in a real scene, then look up the Ohio rule. Include Ohio’s four-or-more-lane school-bus exception rather than importing another state’s rule.

## Choose the language and test location

BMV lists **Chinese, Spanish and English**, along with Arabic, French, Haitian Creole, Japanese, Russian and Somali, in both text and audio. ASL is available in text/video. Even when testing in another language, you must understand directions and read traffic signs printed in English. If your language is not offered, arrange a proctored interpreter test through an exam station. Request disability accommodations before test day.

You can test in person at a driver exam station or selected deputy registrars. Bring acceptable proof of legal name, birth date and SSN if assigned; the [document guide](/oh/blog/oh-first-license-documents) explains the later permit-issuance folder.

Online testing requires a **computer or laptop with a functioning webcam**. Applicants younger than **19** need a supervising adult; identity checks apply to applicants and supervisors. If verification fails or special assistance is needed, follow the in-person route. Taking the test online does not remove the vision screening at permit purchase.

## Leave time after a failed attempt

Wait at least **24 hours** before another knowledge-test attempt. Online attempts are limited to **two in six months**; BMV does not set a total limit for in-person attempts. After passing, finish the vision screening and purchase the TIPIC within **60 days**. Passing the knowledge test alone does not authorize driving; practice starts with the issued permit and the required supervisor.

## Aproveche la muestra oficial

Prepare dos columnas de repaso. En leyes anote prioridad, detenciones, distancia de seguimiento y clima; en señales, formas, colores, palabras, semáforos y marcas viales. Para cada error, explique qué haría al conducir y busque la regla de Ohio. Estudie la excepción de autobuses escolares en vías de cuatro o más carriles sin copiar la norma de otro estado.

## Elija idioma y modalidad

El BMV ofrece **español, chino e inglés**, además de árabe, francés, criollo haitiano, japonés, ruso y somalí, en texto y audio. También ofrece ASL en texto/video. Debe poder entender instrucciones y leer señales impresas en inglés. Para un idioma no disponible, acuerde un examen supervisado con intérprete en una estación. Solicite adaptaciones por discapacidad antes del día del examen.

El examen en línea requiere **computadora o portátil con cámara web funcional**. Los menores de **19 años** necesitan un adulto supervisor; se aplican verificaciones de identidad. Si no logra verificarse o necesita asistencia especial, utilice la vía presencial. Aun aprobando en línea, debe completar el examen visual al comprar el TIPIC.

## Reserve tiempo para los pasos posteriores

Tras reprobar, espere al menos **24 horas**. Solo hay **dos intentos en línea por cada seis meses**; el BMV no limita el total de intentos presenciales. Después de aprobar, complete la evaluación visual y compre el TIPIC dentro de **60 días**. ## 40题之外，还要看分项门槛

[BMV笔试页面](https://bmv.ohio.gov/dl-gdl.aspx)概述为**40道选择题，75%及格**。[行政规则4501:1-1-08](https://codes.ohio.gov/ohio-administrative-code/rule-4501:1-1-08)进一步规定：法规安全部分、标志信号部分各至少20道等分题，**每一部分均须答对75%**。按40题格式准备，就是**两部分各至少答对15/20**，不能只追求全卷凑够30题。

## 用官方样题找缺口

打开[官方笔试样题](https://www.bmv.ohio.gov/dl-sample-test.aspx)，选择答案后使用页面评分按钮。这是一份简短样题，不是完整题库，也不保证考试原题重复。

复习表可以分两栏：法规栏记录让行、停车、跟车距离及雨雪天气决策；标志栏记录形状、颜色、文字、灯号及路面标线。每次答错，先用一句话说清“开车遇到时我要怎么做”，再回查俄州规则。特别复习俄州四车道及以上道路的校车对向例外，不要套用其他州答案。

## 中文可用，英语路牌仍须认识

BMV列出的文字及语音语言包括**中文、西班牙语、英语**，以及阿拉伯语、法语、海地克里奥尔语、日语、俄语和索马里语；另有ASL文字与视频形式。选择中文考试，仍需能够理解指示、阅读英文交通标志。所需语言没有现成版本时，可到考试站安排受监考的翻译协助考试。残障便利应提前申请。

现场考试可在考试站或指定deputy registrar机构参加。带认可的法定姓名、出生日期及SSN证明（曾获分配者）；购买许可还需要的材料见[首次驾照材料指南](/zh/oh/blog/oh-first-license-documents)。

在线考试使用**带正常摄像头的台式电脑或笔记本**。未满**19岁**需要成人监督，考生和监督人须按要求通过身份验证。验证失败或需要特殊协助时，按现场途径办理。在线通过后，购买TIPIC时仍须完成视力筛查。

## 把重考和发证时间留出来

笔试失败后，至少等**24小时**再考。在线为**每6个月最多两次**；BMV未限制现场考试的总次数。通过后，在**60天内**完成视力要求并购买TIPIC。笔试成绩本身不能代替学车许可，必须领到TIPIC，并由符合要求的人陪同，才可开始驾驶练习。
