# The 5-Hour Pre-Licensing Course and New York road test timeline

Understand MV-278, MV-285 and online course records, under-18 practice requirements, and the official New York road-test booking process.

Passing the written knowledge test and obtaining your New York State Learner Permit is just step one. Before you can schedule your road test and receive a driver license, New York State law requires specific steps that surprise many first-time drivers.

### Step 1: Obtain your Learner Permit (Age 16+)
Follow the [state learner-permit guide](https://www.ny.gov/services/get-your-learner-permit) for the application, documents, vision and knowledge test. Your physical photo permit is needed for the road test. See our [permit appointment guide](/ny/blog/ny-dmv-appointments-and-official-tests).

### Step 2: Complete the 5-Hour Pre-Licensing Course (MV-278)
First-time drivers need an approved **5-Hour Pre-Licensing Course** or qualifying driver education before scheduling. Use the official [RT-3 scheduling instructions](https://dmv.ny.gov/document/rt-3) to identify the completion record for your course.
- The course covers highway safety, defensive driving principles, aggressive driving, drug and alcohol laws, and New York traffic regulations.
- Classroom courses issue **MV-278**. Qualifying high school or college driver education uses **MV-285**.
- The DMV-approved online pre-licensing program is available to eligible applicants **18 or older**. Its providers report completion electronically; this route does not issue a paper MV-278. Choose a provider from the [DMV-approved list](https://dmv.ny.gov/business/driver-training/online-pre-licensing-course-providers).
- **Certificate timing:** MV-278 is valid for **one year**; MV-285 for **two years**. Have the required valid course record when scheduling and follow the DMV's instructions for the test-day documents. If you lose a paper certificate, contact the issuing school for a replacement.

### Step 3: Log Supervised Driving Practice
- **Drivers under 18:** Must wait at least **six months** from the date your learner permit was issued before taking a road test. You must complete at least **50 hours** of supervised driving (including at least 15 hours after sunset), certified by a parent or guardian on Form MV-262.
- **Drivers 18 and older:** Are not subject to the six-month wait or mandatory hour log, but practicing on highway and city streets is strongly recommended.

### Step 4: Schedule and Pass the Road Test
Book through the scheduler linked in the [official road-test guide](https://dmv.ny.gov/driver-license/schedule-and-take-a-road-test). Use your permit client ID and the course information required for your route; online-course completion does not require an MV-278 number. On test day, bring:
1. Your valid New York State photo learner permit.
2. Your original MV-278 or applicable MV-285 documentation for certificate courses; follow electronic-record instructions for the approved online course.
3. Form MV-262 signed by a parent/guardian (if under 18).
4. A registered, inspected, insured vehicle with a licensed supervising driver age 21 or older.

- **未满 18 岁（青少年初级许可）：** 拿到学车许可后必须等待至少 **6 个月** 才能参加路考！在此期间必须完成至少 **50 小时** 监督实车驾驶（其中至少 15 小时为夜间驾驶），并由家长或监护人签署 MV-262 监督证明表。
- **18 岁及以上成人：** 没有 6 个月的强制等待期，也无需提交 50 小时表格，拿到 5 小时证书后即可随时预约路考。

### 第四步：预约并参加路考
从[官方路考指南](https://dmv.ny.gov/driver-license/schedule-and-take-a-road-test)进入预约系统，使用 Permit Client ID 和本人课程路径对应的信息。获批在线课程不需要 MV-278 编号。考试当天准备：
1. 有效的纽约州带照片学车许可（Photo Learner Permit）。
2. 证书课程对应的 MV-278 原件或适用 MV-285 材料；获批在线课程按电子记录说明核验。
3. 未满 18 岁需带家长签字的 MV-262 陪练确认表。
