# New York Following Distance: Two Seconds and Poor-Weather Adjustments

Measure a following gap, increase it for bad weather and trucks, and use headlights correctly in rain, fog and snow.

A following gap gives you time to notice a hazard, react and slow down. New York's manual teaches the **two-second rule** for an ordinary space cushion, with a larger gap when conditions require it.

## Measure time between two vehicles

1. Choose a fixed reference ahead, such as a sign or tree.
2. Start counting when the vehicle ahead passes it: “one thousand one, one thousand two.”
3. If you reach the same point before finishing, increase your gap safely.

Keep scanning the road while counting. The gap is the time between both vehicles passing the **same point**, not the time from when you first notice the vehicle.

| Condition | Manual guidance |
| --- | --- |
| Normal conditions | Use the two-second method. |
| Bad weather or following a large truck | Increase to at least three or four seconds. |

These are starting points for judging space. Poor grip, limited visibility and traffic can require more. A time gap is not a fixed braking distance: at higher speed, your vehicle travels farther in each second.

## Rain, fog and snow require speed changes too

Leave more space and reduce speed for slippery roads, including wet leaves. A posted limit is not a promise that the speed is safe in every condition. Brake earlier and gently; take extra care on curves and ramps.

Use headlights when weather requires windshield wipers to clear rain, snow, sleet or fog. **Daytime running lights do not replace headlights.** In rain, fog or falling snow, use low beams because high beams reflect back and reduce visibility.

Bridges, ramps and overpasses can freeze before other road surfaces. Four-wheel drive does not remove the risk of skidding.

## If someone follows you too closely

Keep control and let the other driver pass when you can do so safely. Change lanes or pull off safely if appropriate, signaling your movements. Do not brake suddenly or unnecessarily to frighten the driver behind you.

## Try these scenarios

- **Your gap is less than two seconds on a dry road:** increase it.
- **Rain starts while you follow a truck:** allow at least three or four seconds, and more if necessary; reassess speed and headlights too.
- **The road looks clear but a bridge may be icy:** slow before the hazard and leave extra room.
