# Can you take the New Jersey MVC test in Chinese or Spanish?

MVC offers the written knowledge test in 13 languages, including Chinese (Mandarin) and Spanish. Oral tests are English and Spanish. Here is how to request yours.

### Article — English

New Jersey is one of the states where a first-time driver can sit the knowledge test in **Chinese (Mandarin)** or **Spanish** without bringing their own interpreter.

MVC lists these written languages: English, Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), French, Spanish, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Japanese, Hindi, Albanian, and Turkish. **Oral tests** are offered in English and Spanish.

That does not mean every testing center and driving school is identical. Say you need Chinese or Spanish when you book. If your language is **not** on the list, MVC can arrange a state-contracted interpreter; those appointments are often **four to six weeks** out, so do not wait until the week of the test.

CDL knowledge tests are a different list (English and Spanish; Hazmat English only). This page is about the basic-car knowledge test.

Study in the same language you will use at the MVC, then confirm on the official [knowledge-test page](https://www.nj.gov/mvc/license/knowledgetest.htm). NJ Driver’s site switcher is English / Spanish / 简体中文 — the same three we treat as first-class in the app.

Official rules: confirm on the state agency site. This is a study aid, not the DMV or MVC.
