# New Jersey right on red: stop, read the sign, yield

Learn the ordinary red-light right-turn sequence and distinguish NO TURN ON RED from a stopping-location sign.

### Article — English

For an ordinary right turn at a red light in New Jersey, the driver manual permits the turn unless a NO TURN ON RED sign prohibits it. First make a complete stop, check traffic and yield. The rule is permission under conditions, not an instruction to turn whenever the signal is red.

## Use a three-part sequence

1. **Stop completely.** Slowing while continuing to roll does not satisfy a full stop.
2. **Read the restrictions and check the movement.** A posted NO TURN ON RED sign removes the ordinary permission. Follow any other controls that apply to your lane and direction.
3. **Yield before turning.** Check approaching traffic, crossing pedestrians, bicycles and mopeds. Do not assume that stopping first gives you priority.

Check signal arrows and lane-specific controls as well as roadside signs. Signal at least 100 feet before the turn and cancel the signal afterward.

## Two signs with different jobs

**NO TURN ON RED** restricts the turn. **STOP HERE ON RED** identifies where to stop; that message alone is not the same as a turn prohibition. Look for all the signs at the junction rather than reading one in isolation.

## Compare two study examples

**No turn prohibition, but a pedestrian crossing:** remain stopped as necessary and yield. The turn being generally allowed does not remove the pedestrian conflict.

**Empty junction with a NO TURN ON RED sign:** wait for the appropriate signal. An empty road does not cancel the sign.

The examples are original study scenarios, not MVC test questions. To improve your reading of permissions and obligations, see [must, may and unless](/learn/how-to-read-permit-test-questions).

## Keep neighboring states separate

Do not carry the ordinary NJ red-light rule into every nearby city or state. [New York City's rule](/ny/blog/ny-right-on-red) differs. Write the state and location next to the rule in your notes.

Parar primero no te concede prioridad.

**NO TURN ON RED** prohíbe el giro. **STOP HERE ON RED** indica dónde parar; por sí sola no expresa esa misma prohibición.

Para distinguir permisos y obligaciones, consulta [must, may y unless](/learn/how-to-read-permit-test-questions).

** NO TURN ON RED

**NO TURN ON RED** 表示禁止红灯转弯。

**路口空旷，却有 NO TURN ON RED：** 等待适当信号。
