# New Jersey has an MVC, not a DMV

Generic “US DMV” apps get the agency name wrong. The knowledge test, GDL, and handbook all come from the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission.

- Español: Nueva Jersey tiene MVC, no DMV

### Article — English

If your practice app says “New Jersey DMV,” it was not written for this state.

New Jersey’s licensing agency is the **Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC)**. The knowledge test is scheduled through MVC. The handbook is the *New Jersey Driver Manual*. First-time drivers enter the **Graduated Driver License (GDL)** program. None of that maps cleanly onto a California-style DMV page with the name swapped.

**Why it matters on the test.** Questions about where you apply, what you bring (6 Points of ID), and which permit you hold (special learner at 16 vs examination permit at 17) are MVC questions. A bank that never says “MVC” is guessing.

**Why it matters for the app.** NJ Driver is written for New Jersey, not a renamed California page. The 50-question format, organ-donation survey, GDL plate decals, and the under-21 wireless ban do not exist in the California handbook.

Start with the official [knowledge-test page](https://www.nj.gov/mvc/license/knowledgetest.htm) and the [driver manuals](https://www.nj.gov/mvc/about/manuals.htm). Then drill the MVC material until the vocabulary is automatic.

Official rules: confirm on the state agency site. This is a study aid, not the DMV or MVC.
