# New Jersey permit and knowledge-test appointments: official links and office addresses

Follow the MVC’s separate permit and knowledge-test steps, find a licensing center, and study the official Chinese manual and sample test.

- Español: Nueva Jersey: citas del permiso y examen teórico, enlaces y direcciones oficiales

### Article — English

New Jersey’s agency is the MVC. Its [first-license guide](https://www.nj.gov/mvc/license/firstlic.htm) separates **getting a permit** from **taking the knowledge test**. This guide follows the examination-permit route; the age-16 [special learner-permit route](https://www.nj.gov/mvc/license/youngadult.htm) uses a licensed driving school or participating school.

### Book the right service in the right order

1. Use the [official MVC appointment service](https://telegov.njportal.com/njmvc) to select the initial permit service for your application.
2. Attend with your documents and obtain the permit.
3. Book the separate **knowledge-test** service, then take the knowledge and vision tests as directed.

Keep both confirmations and check the service and location on each. Passing the test starts the supervised-practice stage; it does not immediately issue a basic license.

### Find a licensing center and prepare documents

The [official licensing-center directory](https://www.nj.gov/mvc/locations/liccenters.htm) lists addresses and available services. Examples include:

| Center | Address |
| --- | --- |
| Newark | 228 Frelinghuysen Avenue, Newark, NJ 07114 |
| North Bergen | 8901 Bergenline Avenue, North Bergen, NJ 07047 |
| Edison | 45 Kilmer Rd, Edison, NJ 08817 |

Check current services and appointment availability. Some centers in the directory are labeled **REAL ID Only**. A licensing-center address may differ from a road-test address: Edison’s licensing center is **45 Kilmer Rd**, while the listed Kilmer road-test site is **33 Kilmer Rd**.

Pack your 6 Points of ID, NJ address proof, applicable SSN/ITIN/affidavit documentation and BA-208. The [official document requirements](https://www.nj.gov/mvc/license/6pointid.htm) distinguish identity hard copies from residency documents, which may be electronic or paper. Standard credentials need one residency proof; REAL ID needs two. See our [6 Points checklist](/nj/blog/nj-6-points-of-id).

### Study with official resources

- [Driver manuals](https://www.nj.gov/mvc/about/manuals.htm), including a Chinese edition.
- [MVC sample knowledge test](https://www.nj.gov/mvc/license/sample_knowledge_test.htm), with sample answers. The actual general knowledge exam is **50 questions**, with **40 correct** required.
- [Knowledge-test information](https://www.nj.gov/mvc/license/knowledgetest.htm), including written-test languages such as Mandarin Chinese and Spanish.

Practice with [NJ Driver](/nj), then use the manual to review mistakes. After a failed knowledge test, MVC specifies a **7-day** wait before retesting.

Official sources checked **October 12, 2026**. Next: [road-test documents, practice certification and addresses](/nj/blog/nj-road-test-checklist).

Guarda ambas confirmaciones y comprueba servicio y dirección.

### Centros y documentos

Consulta el [directorio de centros de licencias](https://www.nj.gov/mvc/locations/liccenters.htm):

| Centro | Dirección |
| --- | --- |
| Newark | 228 Frelinghuysen Avenue, Newark, NJ 07114 |
| North Bergen | 8901 Bergenline Avenue, North Bergen, NJ 07047 |
| Edison | 45 Kilmer Rd, Edison, NJ 08817 |

Verifica servicios y disponibilidad; algunos centros solo ofrecen **REAL ID**.

| --- | --- |
| Newark | 228 Frelinghuysen Avenue, Newark, NJ 07114 |
| North Bergen | 8901 Bergenline Avenue, North Bergen, NJ 07047 |
| Edison | 45 Kilmer Rd, Edison, NJ 08817 |

Official rules: confirm on the state agency site. This is a study aid, not the DMV or MVC.
