### Article — English

Prepare for a North Carolina passenger-car road test in three parts: **eligibility, a suitable vehicle and safe driving habits**. A complete document folder cannot replace the required practice or a vehicle that passes the examiner's checks.

| Check before leaving | Adult first license | Teen Level 2 |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Eligibility | 18 or older; complete the applicable tests | 16–17; Level 1 for 9 months; qualifying 6-month clean record |
| Driving log | Follow the requirements applicable to your application | Signed 60 hours, including 10 at night; no more than 10 counted per week |
| Credential and papers | Current permit or credential and relevant application documents | Level 1 permit, driving log and relevant application documents |
| Insurance | Accepted proof naming you; printed proof or secure upload during the visit | Coverage naming the teen, possibly on the owner's policy; bring printed proof, not a phone image |
| Vehicle | Suitable vehicle and registration | Own suitable vehicle and registration; must pass pre-trip inspection |
| Accompanying driver | Follow permit restrictions for the trip; arrange a licensed return driver if needed | Parent/guardian, or another supervisor with written parental/guardian consent |

## Confirm you are eligible

For a first adult license at **18 or older**, NCDMV requires the knowledge, signs, vision and driving tests. The [adult application page](https://www.ncdot.gov/dmv/license-id/driver-licenses/new-drivers/pages/default.aspx) allows you to obtain a learner permit first for supervised practice. If you hold a permit, follow its restrictions on the trip to the office and arrange a licensed driver to take the car home if needed.

For a teen **Level 2 test**, the [official checklist](https://www.ncdot.gov/dmv/license-id/driver-licenses/new-drivers/Pages/level2.aspx) requires age **16–17**, **nine months with Level 1**, and no qualifying moving, seat-belt or mobile-phone convictions in the preceding six months. Complete the [DL-4A driving log](https://www.ncdot.gov/dmv/downloads/Documents/DL-4A.pdf): **60 total hours, at least 10 at night, no more than 10 counted per week**, signed by the supervising driver. Printed and digital logs are accepted.

A parent or guardian must accompany a minor. For another accompanying supervisor, bring written parental/guardian consent naming that person. For permit practice, the supervisor must be a qualified parent, guardian, grandparent or approved responsible adult, licensed for at least **five years**, and seated beside the driver. Level 1 permits allow driving only **5 a.m.–9 p.m. for the first six months**, and supervised driving at any time afterward.

## Pack documents and check the car

Bring your permit or current credential, the application documents relevant to your case, **vehicle registration**, and accepted insurance proof. Teen applicants must show insurance coverage in their own name; they may be listed on the owner's policy. For a teen test, take printed proof rather than a phone image. The general [insurance-document page](https://www.ncdot.gov/dmv/help/Pages/proving-insurance.aspx) lists policies, qualifying cards and DL-123 forms; adult visits also support secure upload.

Bring your own suitable vehicle. NCDMV says the teen road-test vehicle must pass a **pre-trip inspection**. Before leaving, check brakes, brake lights, turn signals, horn, tires, mirrors, seat belts and visibility. Know how to operate the defroster and parking brake. These practical checks help you arrive ready; the examiner determines vehicle acceptance.

Teens may also test through a **DMV-certified driver education school**. If using that option, bring the school's road-test pass certificate to NCDMV along with the other items required by the Level 2 checklist. A private school lesson alone is not that certificate.

## Rehearse ordinary driving, not a guessed route

The [official test description](https://www.ncdot.gov/dmv/license-id/driver-licenses/new-drivers/Pages/driver-license-tests.aspx) includes intersections and signals, quick stops, backing, parking and starting, turns and signals, lane use, following distance, passing, yielding and **three-point turnabouts**.

Practice observing before moving, stopping fully at the right position and choosing a safe gap. Give yourself time to understand an instruction; ask for clarification if needed. Make a maneuver only when it is safe. The [driver handbook](https://www.ncdot.gov/dmv/license-id/driver-licenses/new-drivers/Pages/handbooks.aspx) explains the underlying rules.

After an unsuccessful regular Class C knowledge or driving test, the stated retest interval is **seven calendar days**. Review the examiner's feedback and make a specific practice plan. Before the visit, recheck your [license documents](/nc/blog/nc-first-license-documents) and [knowledge preparation](/nc/blog/nc-knowledge-test-resources).

Official rules: confirm on the state agency site. This is a study aid, not the DMV or MVC.
