### Article — English

Prepare for North Carolina's passenger-car knowledge exam with the **official driver handbook and a separate road-sign review**. Learning the reason for a rule helps you apply it when the road layout or traffic changes.

| Exam item | What to practice | Resource or visit preparation |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Written knowledge | Traffic laws and safe-driving decisions | Ordinary Driver Handbook; confirm your requested test language or oral-test arrangement with NCDMV |
| Traffic-sign recognition | Identify color and shape, then explain the sign | Regulatory and warning sign sheets; practice the driving action for each sign |
| Vision | Meet the driving vision standards | Bring the corrective lenses you need; follow any lens restriction when driving |

## Start with the correct handbook

The [NCDMV handbook page](https://www.ncdot.gov/dmv/license-id/driver-licenses/new-drivers/Pages/handbooks.aspx) links the ordinary Driver Handbook in **English and Spanish**, as well as the separate commercial and motorcycle manuals. Choose the ordinary driver handbook for a regular Class C car license.

Read one topic at a time: right of way, signs and markings, speed and following distance, turns and lane changes, impaired driving, and sharing the road. After each section, close the manual and explain what you would do in a specific situation. If two answers seem plausible, identify the condition that changes the answer, such as a physical median or a pedestrian already crossing.

## Practice signs independently

The [official test description](https://www.ncdot.gov/dmv/license-id/driver-licenses/new-drivers/Pages/driver-license-tests.aspx) separates the written knowledge exam from traffic-sign recognition. For signs, you identify **color and shape and explain the meaning**. Use the [regulatory-sign sheet](https://www.ncdot.gov/dmv/license-id/driver-licenses/new-drivers/Documents/regulatory-signs.pdf) and [warning-sign sheet](https://www.ncdot.gov/dmv/license-id/driver-licenses/new-drivers/Documents/warning-signs.pdf), both linked from the handbook page.

For each sign, say an action aloud: stop completely, yield when required, prepare for a curve, or stay out of a lane. Recognizing a picture without knowing the driving action leaves a gap.

## Arrange language or reading support before testing

NCDMV says the written test is offered in **different languages** and an **oral test is available on request**. Contact the office before the visit to confirm the language you need and how to request oral testing. A Spanish handbook does not establish every testing option, and translated study notes do not establish that an interpreter is permitted.

Use a small bilingual glossary if helpful: *yield, right of way, shoulder, median,* and *center turning lane*. Then explain the entire rule, including its exception. The [school-bus guide](/nc/blog/nc-school-bus-stopping-rules) is useful practice because the number of through lanes changes the rule for opposite-direction traffic.

## Use mistakes to choose the next reading

Keep three columns: situation, your mistaken reasoning, and the correct action with the handbook section. Revisit the explanation rather than memorizing the order of answer choices. Practice material should support learning; it cannot guarantee the wording or questions you will receive.

Before testing, confirm your preferred language and any oral-test arrangements with NCDMV. After an unsuccessful regular Class C knowledge or driving test, you may retake it after **seven calendar days**.

Passing the knowledge test is only one step. Prepare your [application documents](/nc/blog/nc-first-license-documents) and keep practicing under your permit's supervision restrictions before the [road test](/nc/blog/nc-road-test-checklist).

Puede ayudarte un glosario bilingüe con *yield, right of way, shoulder, median* y *center turning lane*.

可做一张双语词卡，记住 *yield、right of way、shoulder、median、center turning lane* 等词，再用完整句子说明规则和例外。
