# Road-sign shapes and colors: a beginner’s study method

Learn to read a sign’s shape, color, symbol and required action together.

- Español: Formas y colores de señales: cómo estudiarlos

### Article — English

Read a road sign in four parts: shape, color, message and required action. Shape and color help you identify its purpose, but they do not replace the symbol, wording or conditions in your state handbook.

## Build a small set of visual families

| Visual cue | Start by looking for |
| --- | --- |
| Red octagon | STOP |
| Downward-pointing triangle | YIELD |
| Yellow diamond | A warning about a condition ahead |
| Orange background | Work-zone information or warnings |
| White regulatory sign | A rule, restriction or instruction |
| Green guide sign | Directions or destinations |

This table is a starting point, not a complete catalog. It cannot determine a speed limit or tell you that a movement is permitted without reading the actual sign.

## Compare signs that lead to different actions

Make pairs from your handbook: STOP and YIELD; a curve warning and a turn restriction; a speed limit and an advisory speed. For each pair, ask: “What information is this sign giving me, and what must I check before acting?” Copying the color alone into your notes leaves out the decision.

Keep traffic signals separate from roadside signs. For example, a circular red signal and a red arrow are different shapes with potentially different turning instructions. Read [California's signal explanation](/ca/blog/ca-red-lights-and-arrows) or [New York's red-light rules](/ny/blog/ny-right-on-red) for that state's context.

## Practice recognition without answer choices

Cover the caption of a handbook sign. Say its meaning, describe where you might encounter it, then explain an appropriate response using the handbook. Uncover the caption and correct your description. Next, compare it with a similar sign so you are learning the distinction rather than its page position.

If studying in Spanish or Chinese, keep the English words shown on the sign alongside your translation. The [three-language vocabulary guide](/learn/permit-test-vocabulary) can help.

## Check knowledge separately from the total score

A strong overall practice result can hide weak sign recognition. Review sign questions as a separate topic and check your state's passing conditions. New York has a specific sign-question requirement; see the [New York road-sign rule](/ny/blog/ny-road-signs-rule).
