# How to read permit-test questions: must, may, except and unless

A repeatable way to notice the conditions in a question before choosing an answer.

- Español: Cómo leer preguntas del examen: must, may, except y unless

### Article — English

Read the situation and its conditions before comparing answers. This is a reading method, not a way to predict official questions. It is especially useful when you understand a rule in Spanish or Chinese but are still learning the English phrasing.

## Use a four-step reading check

1. **Identify the setting.** Which state, road layout, direction and signal does the question describe?
2. **Identify the requested decision.** Is it asking what is required, allowed, prohibited or safest in this situation?
3. **Find qualifiers.** Notice “unless,” “except,” “at least,” “no more than,” “before” and “after.”
4. **Compare complete answers.** An option may begin correctly and then add an action or condition that makes it wrong.

Do not use a shortcut such as “always avoid every answer containing always.” Some rules really are prohibitions. The state handbook and the described situation decide whether the answer fits.

## Must and may ask different questions

“Must” asks about an obligation. “May” asks about permission. Permission to make a movement under specified conditions does not remove the obligation to look for other road users or obey a restriction. Translate the whole sentence rather than replacing one word and guessing the rest.

## Except and unless change the scope

For a study exercise, write: “Review every topic except the one marked complete.” Which topic is omitted? Then write: “Continue this review unless you can explain the rule.” Under what condition would you stop? These are language exercises, not traffic rules.

Apply the same reading habit to a real handbook paragraph. Identify the main rule and mark exactly where the exception starts. Keep both together in your notes.

## Keep distance, speed and sequence separate

If an answer includes a number, record what it measures and under which conditions it applies. Feet, seconds and miles per hour cannot substitute for each other. A stopping distance is different from a following-time interval. Use [your state's resources](/learn), not a number remembered from another state.

## Review the reason for a wrong answer

After each practice question, decide whether you missed the rule, a condition or the vocabulary. Add that reason to a [mistake log](/learn/practice-test-readiness). If a translation remains unclear, read the official source and seek clarification rather than memorizing an ambiguous sentence.

3. **Los matices.** Fíjate en “unless”, “except”, “at least”, “no more than”, “before” y “after”.

## Must y may no significan lo mismo

## Separa distancia, velocidad y orden

** 注意 unless、except、at least、no more than、before、after。
