The Illinois Class D written test checks whether you can read traffic controls and apply safe-driving rules. Start with the **Illinois Secretary of State's [2026 Rules of the Road](https://www.ilsos.gov/drivers-license/rules-of-road.html)**. Read the licensing chapters as well as traffic rules: knowing a sign does not tell you which education or document requirements apply to your own application.

### Understand what the official pass standard says

[92 Illinois Administrative Code §1030.80](https://ftp.ilga.gov/JCAR/AdminCode/092/092010300000800R.html) requires a Class D written test with **at least 35 questions** and **80% correct**. The wording sets a minimum question count. For a 35-question test, 80% is 28 correct; the percentage remains the standard if the test contains more questions.

The rule also requires applicants to demonstrate understanding of official traffic-control devices. Study the meaning and required action, not just the sign's color or a translated label.

### Build a complete set of study resources

- **English handbook:** the current [Rules of the Road](https://www.ilsos.gov/drivers-license/rules-of-road.html), with traffic laws, signs, signals, markings and chapter study questions.
- **Spanish handbook:** the official [Spanish PDF](https://www.ilsos.gov/content/dam/publications/pdf_publications/dsd_a113.pdf), useful for learning the same driving decisions in Spanish.
- **Application requirements:** the [instruction-permit guide](https://www.ilsos.gov/departments/drivers/driver-education/instructpermit.html), plus your age-specific education and document requirements.
- **Precise legal exceptions:** the current statutes linked in our school-bus and Move Over guides.

Use the handbook's answer section after attempting its study questions. For each mistake, write the rule and the condition you overlooked. A correct guess still belongs in the review log if you cannot explain it.

### Keep language arrangements separate from study language

The administrative rule allows English testing and other languages designated by the Secretary of State. It also describes oral testing and interpreter arrangements for eligible applicants. It does not establish that every facility offers every language at every appointment.

Before visiting, ask your chosen facility about the written-test language you need, the procedure for any interpreter or reading assistance, and whether arrangements must be made beforehand. Confirm the practical-test instructions separately. Studying these articles in Chinese or Spanish does not guarantee that same language will be available in the official test.

### Study in decisions, then mix the subjects

Begin with signs and pavement markings, then work through right-of-way, turns and lane changes, school buses, emergency vehicles, parking and impaired driving. Turn each rule into a small scene: where are the vehicles, what signal is active, and what changes your action?

For example, Illinois's [school-bus rule](/il/blog/il-school-bus-stopping-rules) depends on your direction and the road's lane arrangement. Its [Move Over rule](/il/blog/il-move-over-emergency-vehicles) asks you to slow and assess a safe lane change around protected roadside activity. Mixing these subjects tests whether you can identify the situation before selecting an action.

Finish with a practice session across several chapters, review uncertain answers and return to the relevant official section. Practice results measure your preparation; they do not guarantee an official result.
