A Georgia road-test appointment needs three preparations: an eligible applicant, an acceptable vehicle and safe driving skills. Check all three before reserving a date so that a missing paper does not stop a test you have practiced for.

## Confirm eligibility and book the appointment

DDS automobile road tests require an appointment; walk-ins and same-day appointments are not available. Complete the online application before booking through the [DDS appointment page](https://dds.georgia.gov/how-do-i-make-road-test-appointment).

For applicants under 18, finish the Class D requirements, including the permit holding period, Joshua’s Law, ADAP/eADAP and school documentation. For first-time applicants 18 or older, the appointment checklist requires a valid Georgia non-commercial learner’s permit, passing knowledge results and an affidavit for **40 supervised driving hours, including six at night**. Use the [first-license guide](/ga/blog/ga-first-license-documents) to organize the relevant documents. A suspended license makes an applicant ineligible to test.

## Arrange the accompanying driver and test format

The current DDS appointment instructions describe the **Virtual Road Test (VRT)**: an examiner observes remotely through a dual-facing camera and gives instructions through a hands-free device. “Virtual” still means driving a real vehicle at the test location.

Bring a **licensed driver aged 21 or older**. Under the VRT arrangement, only the applicant and that accompanying driver ride in the vehicle; no children, other passengers or pets come along. This person is required supervision, not a substitute examiner or driving coach.

In the traditional format, the examiner rides in the passenger seat. Confirm your appointment’s format and any accessibility arrangements with the center, and follow its seating and equipment instructions. [Road skills testing is conducted in English](https://dds.georgia.gov/testing-and-training/test-and-exams-information).

## Prepare the vehicle the day before

Bring a four-wheel vehicle you can operate confidently. Have a **paper copy of the registration** and a **current valid insurance card**. The license plate must be valid. For a rental, the applicant’s name must appear on the agreement. Bring a bill of sale if the vehicle has temporary tags or was purchased within the last 30 days, as directed by the appointment checklist; confirm any additional requirement for a private-party purchase.

The vehicle must pass a DDS safety inspection. As a practical preparation, test lights, signals, brakes, seat belts and mirrors; clean the glass and remove objects that interfere with driving or camera placement. Learn the controls before test day, particularly if you are borrowing a car.

According to [the manual’s testing section](https://dds.georgia.gov/section-3-testing-information), a car equipped with advanced driver-assistance technology is allowed, but you must demonstrate that you can operate it without that technology. Practice observation and vehicle control rather than relying on automated steering or a display alone.

## Practice the complete sequence

The DDS skill list includes parallel parking **less than 18 inches from the curb**, backing approximately **50 feet** slowly and straight while looking back, a turnabout, stopping, turns, yielding, passing and following at a safe distance. Practice these legally with your supervisor, linking every maneuver to mirror checks, direct observation and signals.

For example, do not treat successful parking as the whole task: scan before moving, control speed during the maneuver, secure the car and check traffic before pulling out again. DDS lists **75%** as the passing score, but preparation should focus on safe decisions throughout the drive.

Afterward, review the examiner’s feedback and complete the license-issuance steps before driving alone. Keep the [Georgia resource page](/ga) handy for targeted review.
