Georgia drivers need two responses ready: create space when passing a roadside emergency or working vehicle, and yield when an emergency vehicle is approaching. Look well ahead so that either response can begin smoothly.

## Give stopped emergency and service vehicles room

Under the Spencer Pass Law, [Georgia Code §40-6-16](https://www.legis.ga.gov/api/document/docs/default-source/joint-features-document-library/t40-ch6-16-%28v29%29-pdf.pdf), approach with caution and move into a lane that is **not adjacent to the qualifying stopped vehicle**, when existing traffic and safety conditions permit.

The rule covers stationary authorized emergency vehicles showing flashing yellow, amber, white, red or blue lights. It also covers stationary towing or recovery, highway-maintenance and utility-service vehicles using traffic cones or displaying flashing or revolving yellow, amber or white lights. A utility crew or tow operator can need the same protective space as an officer at a traffic stop.

Check mirrors and the blind spot, signal and change lanes with a safe gap. Do not force another driver to brake or swerve. If a lane change is impossible, unlawful or unsafe, reduce to a **reasonable speed below the posted limit and be ready to stop**. The [Governor’s Office of Highway Safety guide](https://www.gahighwaysafety.org/move-over-law/) explains this response for roadside emergencies.

There is no single statewide “20 mph below” formula for these vehicles in §40-6-16. Choose a speed that addresses the actual hazard: people beside traffic, a narrow shoulder, debris, poor visibility or a vehicle partly occupying your lane may require substantially more slowing.

## Apply the separate sanitation-worker rule

Active sanitation workers have a specific provision in **§40-6-16.1**, in the same [official code publication](https://www.legis.ga.gov/api/document/docs/default-source/joint-features-document-library/t40-ch6-16-%28v29%29-pdf.pdf). It applies when the vehicle has active sanitation workers and flashing or revolving yellow, amber or white lights. Change into a nonadjacent lane when safe and lawful.

When that change cannot safely or legally be made, the provision specifies a reasonable speed using **10 mph below the posted limit or 25 mph, whichever is higher**, and readiness to stop. For example, on a 45 mph road, the numerical threshold is 35 mph; on a 35 mph road it is 25 mph. These are ceilings for the stated condition, not targets you must maintain: slow further when safety requires, and never treat 25 mph as permission to exceed a lower posted limit.

Watch for workers stepping from either side of the truck. A vehicle’s brief pause in collection does not make passing close to a worker safe.

## Yield to a responding emergency vehicle

When an emergency vehicle approaches using emergency lights and a siren, the [DDS manual](https://dds.georgia.gov/drivers-manual) instructs you to move toward the shoulder, or as far right as possible, and stop safely. Keep intersections and turning paths clear. If you are already in an intersection, clear it safely before stopping; do not stop where the emergency vehicle needs to turn.

For example, a police car parked on the shoulder calls for the lane-change-or-slow response. An ambulance approaching behind you with lights and siren needs you to yield and stop out of its path. Look for additional responding vehicles before rejoining traffic.

No obligues a otro conductor a frenar o desviarse.
