Georgia’s non-commercial knowledge exam has two separate parts: **Road Rules** and **Road Signs**. Build your preparation around both. Being comfortable with written rules will not compensate for weak sign recognition.

## Understand how passing works

The [DDS examination page](https://dds.georgia.gov/testing-and-training/test-and-exams-information) requires **at least 15 correct answers out of 20 in each part**. That is 75% in Road Rules and 75% in Road Signs, assessed separately. For example, 18 correct rules answers and 14 correct sign answers do not satisfy both requirements, even though the combined total is above 30.

The rules section addresses driver responsibilities, laws and safe driving. The signs section asks you to recognize highway signs, signals and markers. Keep two study lists so that a strong result in one area does not hide a gap in the other.

## Use official resources in a useful order

Start with the [Georgia DDS Drivers Manual](https://dds.georgia.gov/drivers-manual). Read the traffic-law chapters for right-of-way, turning, speed, school buses and roadside emergencies. Then work through signs, signals and pavement markings. For each rule, describe the action you would take on a real street.

Next use the free [DDS practice test](https://online.dds.ga.gov/ddsgeorgiagov/practicetest/). Treat it as a way to check your reasoning and find chapters to revisit. A practice result is not an official examination pass, and sample questions do not replace the full manual.

A simple review session can have three stages:

1. Read a short topic, such as yielding at an intersection.
2. Close the page and explain who waits, who proceeds and what could change the answer.
3. Try a few practice questions and return to the source for every uncertain answer.

For signs, connect **shape, color, symbol or wording, and the required action**. A warning that traffic merges calls for a different response from a lane ending. Practice reading English words on real signs as well as recognizing familiar pictures.

## Choose your language before the visit

DDS’s current [language list](https://dds.georgia.gov/list-languages) offers **both non-commercial Road Rules and Road Signs in 26 languages**, including English, Spanish and Chinese. The road skills test is available only in English. Learning concepts in your preferred language is useful, while practicing English driving instructions prepares you for the next stage.

Customers with reading disabilities may request an oral knowledge test at a Customer Service Center; schedules vary. Contact the center ahead of time about the arrangement rather than assuming it is available immediately on arrival.

## Plan the testing visit

Knowledge testing is normally available without an appointment. DDS requires non-commercial applicants to be on the testing computer **no later than 30 minutes before the center closes**. Arrive early enough for document review and processing, with the materials from the [first-license document guide](/ga/blog/ga-first-license-documents).

Put away your phone, notes and other study materials before entering the testing area. Read each question carefully, especially its direction of travel and road separation. Once you pass, complete the remaining permit requirements before beginning supervised practice. Use the [Georgia resource page](/ga) to continue with road-test and traffic-rule guides.
