# Florida first license: documents and the right education course

Choose the adult or teen Class E path, gather identity and address documents, and prepare for your first Florida license visit.

A first Florida Class E license involves two different preparations: proving who you are and completing the requirements for your age. Build your document folder before booking, then check that you are buying the correct education course.

## Choose the path for your age and driving history

For a new applicant **under 18 who has never held a license in another state, country or jurisdiction**, Florida requires the **six-hour Driver Education Traffic Safety (DETS)** course. Certain Florida Department of Education classroom courses and county-school-board DELAP courses may substitute. Use the [FLHSMV DETS page](https://www.flhsmv.gov/driver-licenses-id-cards/education-courses/driver-improvement-schools/driver-education-traffic-safety-dets/) to find approved providers and qualifying alternatives.

First-time adult applicants **18 or older** generally complete the **four-hour Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE)** course. Check the [TLSAE requirements](https://www.flhsmv.gov/driver-licenses-id-cards/education-courses/driver-improvement-schools/traffic-law-substance-abuse-education-tlsae-find-approved-listing-tlsae-course-providers/) if you have previously held a license elsewhere. A transfer application can have different requirements from a first license.

If you already hold a Florida learner’s license or are transferring a valid out-of-state license, check the DETS exceptions before buying a course. Your existing permit or license and, where applicable, its issue date can affect the requirement.

## Put three document groups in your folder

Start with [What to Bring](https://www.flhsmv.gov/driver-licenses-id-cards/what-to-bring/) and choose the checklist for U.S. citizens, immigrants, non-immigrants or Canadians. The identity documents depend on that category.

- **Identity and legal presence:** use the original or acceptable certified document specified for your category. For a U.S. citizen, examples include a valid U.S. passport or an acceptable certified birth certificate; a hospital birth record is not the same document.
- **Social Security:** bring accepted evidence of your complete SSN where required. If you do not have an SSN, follow the official instructions for your category rather than substituting an unrelated number.
- **Florida residential address:** prepare two accepted documents. Review any recency condition for the document you choose. Someone living with family may need the Certification of Address procedure and the host's supporting documents.

If your current name differs from your identity document, check the required marriage certificate or court-order chain and update Social Security records as appropriate. ## Add the teen forms and timeline

The learner's minimum age is **15**. Unmarried minors need parental or legal-guardian consent; a stepparent cannot sign unless they legally adopted the applicant. An online knowledge exam also requires the parent proctoring form, with the required examiner-witnessed or notarized signature.

Before a teen's Class E road test, the minimum license age is **16**. The learner must ordinarily be held for **12 months or until age 18, whichever comes first**. Under-18 applicants need the required driving-experience certification: **50 hours, including 10 at night**, and must meet the moving-violation conditions. ## Make the appointment match the task

A knowledge-test appointment, document issuance and a driving-skills test may have different booking arrangements. Confirm the services at your [chosen office](https://www.flhsmv.gov/locations/), course and test records, vision/hearing screening, and payment instructions. ## Organiza tres grupos de documentos

## Añade los requisitos de menores

La edad mínima del permiso es **15 años**. ## 把材料分成三组

## 青少年还要核对表格和时间

学习驾照最低年龄为 **15 岁**。未婚未成年人需要父母一方或法定监护人同意；继父母只有已合法收养申请人时才能以该身份签字。在线参加知识考试，还需提交家长监考表，按要求在考官面前签名或办理公证。
