# California road test checklist: appointment, documents, vehicle and accompanying driver

Use the DMV testing checklist to prepare your permit, accompanying driver, insurance, registration and a vehicle ready for inspection.

### Article — English

Passing the knowledge test does not automatically make you ready for a California driving test. Check the [learner-permit requirements](https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/driver-licenses-identification-cards/learners-permits/) for your age and the [handbook testing process](https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/california-driver-handbook/the-testing-process/) before booking.

### Book the driving test and confirm the location

Use [DMV appointments](https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/appointments/) for the behind-the-wheel test. The [office finder](https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/locations/) has an **automobile driving tests** service filter. Keep the confirmation and its location instructions. Minors have additional education, training and permit-holding requirements; adults should use the adult permit pathway.

### Pack documents and arrange a driver

- Your instruction permit or driver license.
- Valid vehicle registration and proof of insurance.
- An accompanying California-licensed driver: at least **18** for an adult applicant, or **25** for a minor applicant, unless the applicant is already licensed as permitted by DMV rules.
- Corrective lenses if your permit or license requires them.

The permit FAQ specifically says foreign-license holders still need an accompanying driver to and from the test. For a rental car, the contract must name you and permit driving tests. Confirm those terms with the rental company before test day.

### Check the car before leaving

DMV checks safety equipment before the driving portion. Test the turn signals, brake lights, horn, windshield wipers and seat belts; check tires, mirrors and the windshield. Be able to identify the controls when asked. Use [DMV test-preparation resources](https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/driver-licenses-identification-cards/preparing-for-knowledge-and-drive-tests/) for the safety checklist and videos.

Backup cameras and blind-spot monitors do not replace looking and checking traffic yourself. Automated features cannot perform the driving skills being evaluated. An interpreter can assist with the pre-drive inspection but cannot accompany the driving test; recording the test is prohibited.

If a minor fails the drive test, the handbook specifies a **14-day** wait, excluding the failure date. Follow DMV instructions for another appointment.

Official sources checked **October 12, 2026**. For the earlier stage, see [permit appointments and official practice tests](/ca/blog/ca-dmv-appointments-and-official-tests).
