# California-only rules that show up on the DMV test

Lane splitting, the hands-free phone law, and HOV lanes are not trivia. They are why a national question bank is not enough for California.

Most “US DMV” apps recycle the same right-of-way questions in every state. California’s handbook is different, and the knowledge test follows it.

**Lane splitting.** California is the only state where a motorcycle may travel between lanes of slow or stopped traffic when it is done in a safe and prudent manner. The test is not asking you to cheer for it; it is asking whether you know it can be legal here.

**Hands-free / “No Touch.”** Holding a phone while driving — including to change a song or check a map — is illegal. Mount it before you move. Bluetooth is not a loophole if you are still holding the device.

**HOV lanes.** Carpool lanes have occupancy rules that change by freeway. Enter and exit only at dashed lines. A generic quiz that never mentions HOV is not a California quiz.

**Pedestrians and bicyclists.** California puts extra weight on yielding, dooring, and bike-lane rules. If you trained on a 50-state bundle, this is usually the gap.

Read the official [testing process](https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/california-driver-handbook/the-testing-process/) in the handbook, then drill the CA-only items until they feel obvious. That is the whole product thesis for this state.

**免提 / “No Touch”。

Official rules: confirm on the state agency site. This is a study aid, not the DMV or MVC.
