# California Crosswalk Parking: The 20-Foot Daylighting Rule

Understand the approach-side parking buffer, the 15-foot curb-extension rule, unmarked crosswalks and why an unpainted curb is not permission to park.

Before parking near a crossing, check the space between your vehicle and the crosswalk. California's daylighting rule keeps that area open so drivers and pedestrians can see each other.

## Which distance applies?

| Location | General buffer |
| --- | --- |
| Vehicle approach side of a marked or unmarked crosswalk | No stopping, standing or parking within 20 feet. |
| Vehicle approach side of a crosswalk with a curb extension, also called a bulb-out | The buffer is 15 feet. |

The approach side is the stretch you pass **before reaching the crosswalk in the direction of traffic**. The distance is from the crossing, not from the stop-sign pole. On a one-way street, both curbs can be on the approach side.

Look for lawful local signs and markings: local authorities can establish a different distance under the conditions in Vehicle Code section 22500(n). Other parking restrictions still apply.

## No paint does not mean parking is allowed

The general rule applies even without a red curb or a warning sign. Crosswalks can also be unmarked. A gap in painted stripes does not by itself remove the pedestrian crossing or its parking restriction.

Turning on hazard lights, staying in the driver's seat or stopping briefly for a passenger does not create a general exception to a prohibition on stopping, standing and parking. A white loading curb alone is not permission to ignore the crosswalk buffer.

Never park on the crosswalk itself, block a sidewalk or driveway, or obstruct a wheelchair-access ramp. Check these restrictions separately from the distance rule.

## A quick parking check

1. Identify the crossing and the direction of traffic.
2. Look for a curb extension and official local signs or markings.
3. Leave the required buffer; if you cannot judge it confidently, choose a clearer legal space.
4. Check the curb color, posted hours, driveway and accessibility restrictions too.

| Lugar | Espacio libre general |
| --- | --- |
