# California DMV test: 10 rules to review

Review California rules on phone use, carpool lanes, school buses and other topics before test day.

### Article — English

California’s published knowledge-test passing score is **80%**. The current permit page does not guarantee a fixed question count for every applicant. Review these easily confused topics and confirm each rule in the [California Driver Handbook](https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/california-driver-handbook/) before test day. Official testing sources checked October 12, 2026; this is a study aid, not the DMV.

**1. Motorcycle lane splitting can be legal here.** California is the only state that allows a motorcycle to travel between lanes of slow or stopped traffic when it is done in a **safe and prudent** manner. The trap answer is “never legal.” The test is not asking you to cheer for it.

**2. Holding the phone is illegal — including to change a song.** The hands-free / “No Touch” rule is not “no talking.” It is no holding the device while driving, even to tap a map or skip a track. Mount it before you move. Bluetooth is not a loophole if the phone is in your hand.

**3. HOV lanes: enter and exit only at dashed lines.** Occupancy rules change by freeway and time of day. Crossing a solid double yellow to hop into the carpool lane is the classic miss. A quiz that never says “HOV” is not a California quiz.

**4. You pass at 80%, not “most of the questions.”** Three attempts per application. Fail the same test three times and you reapply, fee included. Minors wait **seven days**, not counting the failure day. Tests stop about 30 minutes before closing.

**5. Pedestrians and bicyclists get extra weight.** Yield at crosswalks, marked or unmarked. Dooring a rider in a bike lane is not a trivia footnote. If you studied a 50-state bundle, this is usually the gap.

**6. A school bus with red lights flashing means stop.** Do not pass from either direction on an undivided road. Divided-highway exceptions exist in the handbook — learn the California wording, not a memory of another state.

**7. Right on red is allowed only after a complete stop, and never if a sign forbids it.** Rolling through because “nobody is coming” is the miss. Same idea at a red arrow: stop first, then follow the posted rule.

**8. Residence districts are 25 mph unless a sign says otherwise.** School zones drop to 25 mph when children are present. Speeding questions on this test are local, not “whatever the freeway felt like in your last state.”

**9. Move over or slow down for stopped emergency and work vehicles.** California’s move-over rule covers more than police cars with lights on. If you cannot change lanes safely, slow to a reasonable speed.

**10. Under 21 is not the adult 0.08 standard.** Drivers 21 and older are impaired at 0.08% BAC. Under 21, any measurable alcohol is the problem. Mixing the two numbers is an easy way to drop below 80%.

Drill these in [CA Driver](/ca) until they feel obvious, then read the official [testing process](https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/california-driver-handbook/the-testing-process/).

一律以 [dmv.ca.gov](https://www.dmv.ca.gov) 为准。
